NAPERVILLE, IL., October 13, 2007— The Overtime School of Wrestling, one of the midwest’s premier wrestling clubs, paired up this past weekend with the International Fight League (IFL) to introduce mixed martial arts and how it applies to wrestling to a very enthusiastic group of Chicago-area wrestlers.
Undefeated lightweight star Chris Horodecki joined veterans Gideon Ray, Mark Miller and Quad Cities Silverbacks’ assistant coach (and former Iowa wrestler) Steve Rusk to put on a two-part clinic starting Friday evening and continuing on to Saturday morning.
The clinic was open to all members of the Overtime School of Wrestling community as well as folks from the area interested in learning more about the fastest growing sport of MMA. The sessions were split into kids and adult groups, with each side learning about technique and how the wrestling discipline fits within the MMA structure.
Sean Bormet, Overtime coach and founder, broke his own rules on Friday and invited parents behind his normally closed doors to watch as their youngsters took grappling lessons from Rusk and Ray just before Horodecki took the reins and taught basic kickboxing combinations.
Bormet is among USA Wrestling’s most respected and successful coaches. He received the 2006 Terry McCann Award as USA Wrestling’s Freestyle Coach of the Year. Bormet was also USA Wrestling’s 2004 Developmental Coach of the Year. The Overtime School of Wrestling is one of the nation’s most respected youth wrestling clubs, and produces many successful age-group athletes who participate in major USA Wrestling competitions.
Eager to learn more, the aspiring champions hung on every word that baby-faced Horodecki had to say while John Kading, a coach with Overtime along with Bormet, stood quietly by and admired the coaching skills of a fighter who’s barely out of his teens.
Despite chilly temperatures on Saturday morning, sweat was pouring inside the immaculate facility which is tightly nestled in the business park of Naperville, IL. Once again, Rusk took the floor to showcase a few of his favorite grappling techniques and Ray offered up his Jiu Jitsu expertise to fine tune the newcomers’ moves.
When Horodecki took control of the whistle for the second session, he betrayed his childish physique and barked out commands, “Right, left, straight right, knee!” And though his forte may be style and technique, it’s Chicago’s own Mark Miller who throws a truly devastating strike, so he took the opportunity to point out the intricate secrets of the knockout.
When it was all said and done, the guys stuck around to answer questions, sign autographs, take pictures and spread the word about the upcoming IFL event at Chicago’s Sears Centre to be aired live on MyNetwork TV November 3. Ray, Miller, Rusk and Horodecki were all glad to have had the opportunity to offer a taste of mixed martial arts to one of the most successful wrestling schools on the planet and to help further develop the partnership between USA Wrestling and the IFL.
