Health and Safety
Make Life Harder for Criminals
By Zena Sultana Babao

It never hurts to be careful, attentive,
informed and aware about your personal
safety and security when you are in your
home, or out and about. The world we
live in has a lot of crazies in it, and it’s
better to be safe than sorry.
The following tips, developed by
the San Diego Police Department’s Community Crime Prevention Unit,
may help save your cash and belongings, and especially your life. I am
sharing them with you, for as the saying goes, a candle is not dimmed
by lighting another candle. Let these tips be the candles that will light
your way during these dark and crazy times we live in today.
By taking a few simple precautions, you can reduce the risk
to yourself and also discourage those who commit crimes. Burglars,
robbers, and thieves seek primarily to remove cash or property.
However, criminals are capable of harming you with little or no
provocation, so it would be better to know some prevention tactics
and precautions that will make life harder for criminals.

Home Safety
(1) Always leave your headlights on when arriving home after dark
until you have unlocked the garage door, or unlocked the front door.
(2) When arriving home by taxi, ask the driver to wait until you are
safely inside.
(3) Have your door key in your hand so you can open the door
immediately when you return home.
(4) If you are a woman alone, list only your first initial and last name on
the mailbox, or in the telephone directory.
(5) When moving into a new apartment or residence, always have the
locks re-keyed, or changed. You never know who might have the key.
(6) Know who is at your door before opening it. Wide angle viewers
(180 or 200 degrees) enable you to identify the visitor. You can see the
person, that person can’t see you.
(7) Never rely on chain locks. They are a privacy lock, but not a security
lock.
(8) Never dress in front of windows, always close the drapes.
(9) Never let anyone into your home without proper identification.
Don’t be afraid to ask for identification.
(10) Never let strangers into your home to use your telephone. Make
the call for them while they wait outside.
(11) Always leave outside lights on after dark, or use motion sensor
lights.
(12) If you receive a wrong number phone call, don’t give your name or
phone number.
(13) If you receive an obscene phone call, hang up and call the police.
(14) In an apartment building, never be alone in the laundry room.
(15) If you suspect anyone is in your house, do not go in. Go to a
neighbor and call the police.
(16) If you see or hear anything suspicious, call the police.

While you are Out and About
(1) Be alert to your surroundings and the people around you, especially
if you are alone or it is dark.
(2) Try not to go out alone at night. Avoid unfamiliar areas, if possible.
(3) Whenever possible, travel with a friend.
(4) Don’t take shortcuts; don’t walk in or near alleys, and don’t walk on
deserted streets.
(5) Walk close to the curb. Avoid doorways, bushes and alleys where
someone could hide.
(6) Walk confidently, and at a steady pace.
(7) Make eye contact with people when walking.
(8) Do not respond to conversation from strangers on the street,
continue walking.
(9) If you carry a purse, hold it securely between your arm and your
body. Put your keys and wallet in your pockets and not in your purse.
(10) Don’t get into an empty elevator with a stranger. If you do ride
with another person, stand near the control panel and if attacked,
press as many of the control buttons as possible.
(11) Don’t hitchhike, and if someone suspicious is following you, cross
the street, and walk into an open business.
(12) If you are alone at work after business hours, keep the door
locked.
(13) If you work late, ask the security guard or co-worker to walk you
to your car.
(14) When meeting a new friend, exchange phone numbers only, not
addresses. On a first date, let family and friends know where you are
going. Consider a daytime meeting rather than a night meeting on a
first date, and meet in a public place.
(15) It is never a good idea to go to a nightclub alone, and if you do,
provide your own transportation.

Car Safety
(1) Always lock car doors after entering or leaving your car.
(2) Park in well-lighted areas and never leave your keys in the car.
(3) Have your car keys in your hand so you don’t have to linger before
entering your car.
(4) Check the back seat before entering your car.
(5) If you think you are being followed, drive to a public place.
(6) Always keep your car in gear when stopped at a traffic signal or
stop sign, so if threatened in any way, you can quickly drive away.
(7) If your car breaks down, open the hood and attached a white cloth
to the car antenna. If someone stops to help, stay in the locked car, roll
down the window a little and ask them to call a tow service.
(8) If you stop to aid others, do not get out of the car. Ask what the
problem is, and call the police.
(9) Always lock your doors while driving.
(10) Always prearrange meetings with anyone so you do not have to
wait alone.

Riding the Bus, Taxi, or Trolley
(1) During off-hours, sit as close to the bus driver as possible.
(2) Stay alert - and be aware of the people around you.
(3) If you are going to be out late, be sure you have cab fare.
(4) If someone on the bus bothers you, change seats and /or tell the
driver.
(5) Have your fare or pass ready in hand when boarding the bus.
(6) Carry your wallet inside your coat, or in a front pocket. A comb,
placed horizontally in the fold of your wallet, will alert you if someone
tries to remove it from your pocket.
(7) Check your purse or wallet if someone is jostling, crowding, or
pushing you.
(8) Keep your handbag in front of you and hold it close to your body
with both hands.
(9) If you see any suspicious activity, tell the driver.
(10) At night, avoid dark and isolated intersections and stops.
(11) Look around when getting off the bus or trolley, and be aware of
people around you.

If a Crime Occurs - Report It
Everyone should consider it his/her responsibility to report
a crime. Many criminals target favorite areas and have predictable
methods of operation. When you report all the facts about a crime, it
helps the police assign officers where crimes are occurring or where
they are most likely to occur.
At least one out of two crimes in the United States goes
unreported, either because people don’t think law enforcement can
do anything about it, or because people don’t want to get involved. If
you don’t report a crime, the criminal can continue to operate without
interference. In many cases, it is the information provided by victims
and witnesses that leads to the arrest of the criminals. Be the eyes and
ears of our law enforcement officers and be conscientious in reporting
crimes.
Your life and continued safety may depend on it!

Deterrente?
Tale postura, fossi scippatore, mi attirerebbe un casino.
Cosa un pò differente se cammini con una mano dentro di essa.

Mi riferivo al punto 8 di home safety, colpa mia

Never dress in front of windows, always close the drapes.

PS. ad es. buzzicona californiana nuda dalla finestra, sta in una botte di ferro
